UIN Raden Fatah, at IWGM 2023 Showcases Renewable Energy Innovations
Rector of State Islamic University (UIN) Raden Fatah Palembang Prof. Dr. Nyayu Khodijah, S.Ag, M.Si, became one of the speakers at The 9th International Workshop on UI GreenMetric World University Rankings (IWGM 2023). The international activity which took place at Universidade Do Minho Portugal involved 20 countries with the theme “Innovation, Impact and Future Direction of Sustainable Universities, and was held from June 15-17, 2023. Prof. Dr. Nyayu presented innovation material on Solar Electricity Energy: Utilization of Renewable Energy Sources to Realize a Sustainable Campus at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang. According to him, universities play an important role in achieving Indonesia’s carbon neutral target in 2060. Emissions on campus are mainly sourced from electrical energy, transportation, and water use, as well as other waste.
“Electrical energy from the sun is renewable energy, free from pollutants and noise pollution, therefore UIN Raden Fatah has conducted a sustainable performance study of sunlight,” said Prof. Nyayu. The indicator that displays renewable energy innovation, according to Prof. Nyayu, UIN Raden Fatah from the beginning of 2022 to March 2023, solar power plants (PLTS) operating with a capacity of 7.74 kWp have produced electricity of 6,281.5 kWh (28.55 kWh / day). Gradually, UIN Raden Fatah continues to develop its energy sources towards sustainable energy.
Prof. Nyayu continued, the development of other research-scale renewable energy with hybrid solar energy and wind power for aesthetic lighting functions in the rectorate building has the potential to produce 290 kWh / year. In addition, microhydro energy sources from campus canals (water volume ±9,400 m3) and biomass are potential renewable energy sources at UIN Raden Fatah for a sustainable campus in the future and contribute to reducing the impact of climate change. From these indicators, Prof. Nyayu ensures that UIN Raden Fatah continues to innovate in realizing a Green-Campus that is sustainable, environmentally friendly, contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) targets, and is carbon neutral in Indonesia in 2060.
“This activity is part of the implementation of cooperation in the field of sustainability. With the implementation of SDGs, realizing a green and environmentally friendly campus. UIN Raden Fatah Palembang has also carried out conversion efforts from potential resources to renewable energy,” said Prof. Nyayu. During the event in Portugal, UIN Rector Raden Fatah was accompanied by Vice Rector II for Administration, General, Planning, and Finance, Dr. Abdul Hadi, M.Ag, and Chairman of Ecogreen Campus, Dr. Ledis Heru S.
